Common Sense Texans, a statewide coalition of over 100,000 tea partiers, 9/12ers and other grassroots conservative strategists from around Texas, are taking strong exception to a statement made by extreme liberal Austin Congressman Lloyd Doggett yesterday regarding the tea party’s role in advocating against the government takeover of the healthcare industry.
Representative Doggett, whose refusal to address citizen concerns over the healthcare legislation at an informal town hall in early August led to the widely reported “Just Say No!” shout-off, glowed over the Democratic healthcare bill victory in the House yesterday by proclaiming, “Essential health care shouldn't depend on the kindness of strangers, the goodness of neighbors, and certainly not the just say 'no' of Republicans or the weak tea parties brewed up by the insurance lobby.”
Phillip Dennis, President and one of the founders of Common Sense Texans, replied, “We are great believers in the exceptional qualities of our nation, especially the kindness of strangers and the goodness of neighbors. As for Representative Doggett’s assertion that tea parties around the state are funded or led by the insurance lobby, he should know that we fund these events for the public good out of our own pockets and without the help of insurance lobby groups. While we realize it is convenient for him to make that statement, it is simply not true.”
“Although Representative Doggett remains fixated on his Just Say No debacle,” continued, Dennis, “we are at least pleased that, even though he has repeated his ‘weak tea’ phrase, he has not continued to refer to tea partiers with a sexual epithet as he did in the sanctuary of the United Methodist Church in Austin in late August. So I guess we are making some progress.”
The goals of Common Sense Texans are to educate, advocate and support citizens and their public servants in the group’s five core values: limited government, fiscal responsibility, personal responsibility, the rule of law and national sovereignty. The coalition is formed by individuals around the state and major grassroots conservative strategist groups in Dallas, Fort Worth, Carrollton, Arlington, Mesquite, Houston, Katy, Baytown, San Antonio, Austin, Wichita Falls, Lubbock and El Paso.
